Over the past year, there has been an eightfold increase in data redaction requests for CCTV footage among providers in the childcare industry. Despite the childcare industry facing extended periods of closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team at Datascan redacted 73 CCTV video files in 2020, a considerable increase on 2019.
Challenge for childcare professionals
While the childcare industry faced periods of closure in the last year, many have remained open in a limited capacity and with strict procedures in place around child drop-offs and limited interaction between staff and parents. As creches continue to provide a vital service, small accidents amongst children can still happen and, due to social distancing, this can present additional challenges for the childcare professionals when engaging with parents and families.
Health & Safety
Health and safety are a clear priority for childcare providers, but business owners need to be mindful of the legal requirements with CCTV redaction and ensure they have the correct protocols in place to deal with data requests. Children are prone to the occasional accident, but in certain circumstances resolution may go further than an internal discussion, resulting in a request for CCTV footage. In this case, professional data redaction is required to ensure all relevant parties are covered.
Redaction Requests
In the past year, we have seen a significant increase in redaction requests and duplicated requests from creche owners to assist with engagement with parents virtually. CCTV footage has been relied upon more frequently during this time to resolve issues, as parents are restricted from entering their child’s creche to have face to face meetings. To further complicate the process, if the footage needs to be shown to more than one set of parents then the childcare provider must produce separate versions of the footage, each only showing the child of the given parents.
